Dana Anne Yee, Landscape Architect, LLC.

Project Name:Choy Residence
Location:Honolulu, Hawaiʻi
Client:Mrs. Helen Choy

Mrs. Helen Choy loves Red Azaleas. Her desire was to see many Red Azaleas planted throughout her garden. This beautiful Maunalani Heights residence was in need of sprucing up. 95 years young, Mrs. Choy wanted to improve and revitalize her landscape so as to bring the original 1966 George S. Walters landscape back to its glory. Now, flowering Azaleas, "Amy Yoshioka" Gardenias, and Pinwheel Gardenias are planted throughout the landscape.

Mrs. Choy worried that nothing would grow in the garden spaces at the end of the driveway because of the fierce winds coming down the Waialae Nui Gulch Valley. Mrs. Choy did not want to risk the health of a Citrus Tree or the Red Azaleas in this extremely windy area. Thus, Dana utilized the Agave plants that were growing wildly in her hillside landscape. The sculptural Agave plants were rearranged to now artistically grace the driveway planters. Additionally, new river rocks and Mondo Grass were placed and planted strategically throughout the gardens.

Mrs. Choy can now enjoy her beautiful, revitalized garden that she can visualize from her 2nd floor lanai and from her interestingly designed angled windows. Mrs. Helen Choy now loves and enjoys her new Red Azalea filled garden.

The Choy Residence was recognized by Scenic Hawaii for a Betty Crocker Landscape Award of Honor in 2013.
